 ART LIVES

TRIBUTE COLLECTION: stories that need to be kept ALIVE.

Frida Kahlo

turned her pain into her

purpose. Her fearless exploration of storytelling through the darker side of her anguished autobiography was a catalyst for all artists who followed. She gave us permission to confront and reflect our more personal and painful subjects. She liberated the art world by exploring gender and politics, race, class, & society in her portraits and self-portraits. She turned her tragedies into visual tools of triumph, and invited us to look closely and more deeply into our own shadows and wounds.

“Viva Frida” is my tribute piece to Frida Kahlo.

Inspired by Frida’s, Self-portrait in a Velvet Dress,
she painted it in 1926 (only a year after her horrific accident which left her with a badly broken spinal column, collar bone, ribs and more).

In this painting, her neck is long and her expression, serene.

This is how Frida imagined herself,

as a goddess of Love, beautiful and pain free.

I wish to remember her that way too, by replicating this specific portrait, and honoring her message of Love over pain.

July 2020, we celebrate Frida’s life and what would be her 113th Birthday. More than 100 years after her death, she is still inspiring us to live openly and fearlessly.

Viva Frida!

Viva Frida Messenger Bag
Come As You Are.jpg

KURT Cobain

found dead.

Cover of People magazine, April of 1994.  On that cover, I looked deeply into the most loving and pained eyes I had ever seen & was feverishly inspired to paint. I believe we artists are all messengers for the other sensitives ones in our culture.  Kurt Cobain loved art and music.  His grandmother was an artist and he enjoyed drawing and reading.  He brought early awareness to sexual abuse & homophobia & stood up for those often overlooked & misunderstood.

Looking into the eyes of his gentle spirit and highly sensitive soul, I couldn’t help but feel a comradery.  Also, a sense of responsibility to ensure the sensitive ones in our culture that they are valued & understood. . .and most importantly loved and encouraged to...

Come as you are.

We chose the name of this bag as tribute to the song and message of Kurt Cobain, marking the 25th year after his death.
